Canada wildfire forces over 20,000 to evacuate as state of emergency declared

British Columbia is under a state of emergency as a fast-moving wildfire, dubbed the Bald Range fire, has forced more than 20,000 residents to evacuate their homes. The blaze, which ignited Friday afternoon, exploded in size within hours, driven by strong winds and extreme drought conditions. It rapidly advanced toward populated areas, triggering overnight evacuation orders for communities like Summerland and Peachland.

Around 12,000 people in Summerland and 8,000 in Peachland and surrounding areas had to flee their homes. The mass exodus led to scenes of chaos on congested routes as residents escaped with only what they could carry. Provincial Premier David Eby confirmed significant losses of homes and properties, cautioning that the full extent of the damage remains unevaluated due to the active fire.

Emergency services conducted aerial evacuations for those trapped behind the fire's perimeter. In Faulder, over 50 people were rescued by air as the fire raged uncontrollably. Helicopters and water bombers are working intensely to contain critical hotspots. The Bald Range fire grew to over 100 square kilometers in just a few hours, advancing about 15 kilometers toward Okanagan Lake. Social media images depicted homes engulfed in flames and roads surrounded by fire as residents attempted to escape.

The intensity of the fire even forced emergency teams to retreat, with local officials evacuating operational centers due to imminent risk. This reflects the speed and ferocity of the phenomenon. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are investigating a potential fatality linked to the fire, though conditions have hampered official confirmation. The state of emergency grants authorities exceptional powers, including restricting movement and securing accommodation for evacuees, facilitating large-scale resource coordination amid the ongoing crisis.
