Yellow Alerts Issued for Extreme Cold, Snow, and Winds Across Argentina

Argentina's National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued yellow alerts for extreme cold, snowfall, and strong winds, including the Zonda wind phenomenon, affecting four provinces on Tuesday, June 23. These alerts signal potential weather events capable of causing damage and temporarily disrupting daily activities.

Snowfall is anticipated in Santa Cruz and Chubut, with expected accumulations between 5 and 10 centimeters in plateau areas and 10 to 20 centimeters in the cordillera regions. Simultaneously, Salta and Jujuy are under yellow alerts for strong westerly winds, with speeds ranging from 50 to 70 km/h and gusts potentially reaching over 90 km/h, which could reduce visibility. Western Jujuy faces a yellow alert for Zonda winds, characterized by speeds of 30 to 45 km/h with gusts over 60 km/h, potentially causing reduced visibility, sudden temperature increases, and very low humidity.

In addition to these alerts, 15 provinces are experiencing yellow alerts for extreme cold. These include Neuquén, Mendoza, San Luis, La Rioja, Córdoba, Santa Fe, Paraná, Catamarca, Corrientes, Misiones, Tucumán, Formosa, Chaco, Salta, and Jujuy. Temperatures in these regions are expected to hover around 0 degrees Celsius, posing a mild to moderate risk to health, particularly for vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses.

The SMN also provided the forecast for the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (AMBA), indicating continued cold conditions. Temperatures in Buenos Aires city are expected to range from a minimum of 5°C to a maximum of 12°C, with mostly cloudy skies throughout the day. The province of Buenos Aires will see similar conditions, with a minimum of 6°C and a maximum of 11°C.
