Yellow Alerts Issued for Snow, Wind, and Extreme Cold Across Eight Argentine Provinces

Argentina's National Meteorological Service (SMN) has issued yellow alerts for several weather phenomena across eight provinces for Thursday, August 13. These alerts warn of potential "damage-causing meteorological phenomena and risk of momentary interruption of daily activities."

The yellow alert for snowfall covers western Salta, Catamarca, and La Rioja, northwestern San Juan, southwestern Mendoza, and western Neuquén. Persistent snowfall is expected, with accumulated snow potentially reaching 30 to 60 centimeters, possibly exceeding these amounts in some areas. Intense winds and reduced visibility, including "white wind" (viento blanco), are also anticipated. The SMN recommends avoiding travel and ensuring vehicles are equipped for icy and snowy conditions. They also advise checking roofs, gutters, and drains, ventilating homes to prevent carbon monoxide buildup, and preparing an emergency kit.

Additionally, yellow alerts for strong winds are in effect for western Catamarca and Salta. The mountainous regions are expected to experience wind speeds between 60 and 80 kilometers per hour, with gusts potentially exceeding 100 kilometers per hour. The SMN advises against going outside, securing loose objects, and closing doors and windows. Pedestrians are warned not to shelter under marquees, billboards, trees, or poles, and drivers should exercise caution.

Finally, a yellow alert for extreme cold affects Tucumán, parts of Catamarca, and eastern Jujuy. These temperatures can be dangerous, particularly for at-risk groups like children, the elderly (over 65), and individuals with chronic illnesses. The SMN recommends limiting prolonged exposure to the cold, dressing in multiple layers of light clothing if going outside, maintaining safe home heating, drinking plenty of fluids, avoiding alcohol, and paying close attention to vulnerable individuals.
