Yeo Esther Says 28 Electroconvulsive Treatments Ended Her ‘Bad Thoughts’

Yeo Esther says she received 28 electroconvulsive treatments while hospitalized for depression and that her “bad thoughts” disappeared from October last year.

The doctor and entrepreneur will discuss her treatment on KBS 2TV’s “Problem Child in House,” where she is scheduled to appear with her husband, doctor and medical journalist Hong Hye-geol. The couple have been married for 33 years.

Yeo said she did not tell Hong about the hospitalization because he had recently undergone lung surgery after doctors found ground-glass opacity in his lungs. Hong said he did not know she had been admitted because she had not told him.

Hong also said the couple were planning a trip to Africa. He explained that he intended to book accommodation that could not be refunded for Yeo, who had spent time lying in bed because of depression.

The couple, who recently began living together in Seoul, also talked about their finances. Hong said he knew the combination to Yeo’s safe and took cash when he needed it. He added that Yeo had not gone shopping for six or seven years and that he was the only person in the household spending money.
