Yogyakarta Mayor Urges Students: Achieve Financial Freedom Before 50, Master Soft Skills

Yogyakarta Mayor Hasto Wardoyo is encouraging students at the Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) to plan for their futures by targeting financial independence before the age of 50. Wardoyo delivered this message during a career development seminar held on the UMY campus.

"You should be financially free before age 50. You shouldn't have to worry about where your next meal comes from," Wardoyo stated to hundreds of students at the seminar, themed "The Professional Compass: Navigating Mental Wellness and Career Survival." He stressed the critical need for economic self-sufficiency among the youth to navigate future uncertainties.

Wardoyo clarified that financial freedom isn't solely about accumulating wealth but about establishing passive income streams that can support living expenses without complete reliance on active employment. This goal is particularly crucial as the Special Region of Yogyakarta is entering an aging population phase. Failure to prepare for early financial independence could impact the region's future economic growth.

Furthermore, Wardoyo pointed out the increasing significance of soft skills in professional life. He noted that adaptability, communication, and empathy are now more critical to career success than hard skills. While academic programs may focus heavily on hard skills, Wardoyo asserted that the professional world demands a reversal, with soft skills determining up to 80% of success.

He also urged students to dream big, step outside their comfort zones, and embrace "creative tension", using the gap between their current situation and aspirations as motivation for self-transformation. Wardoyo concluded by advising students to actively participate in campus organizations to hone leadership abilities and expand their social networks, urging them to become driving forces for development and leverage the demographic bonus for Indonesia's advancement.
