Yoong Chia's 30 Years: Memories Take Form on Canvas

For visual artist Chang Yoong Chia, memories and personal experiences are not just recollections but a living source of inspiration, translated into the visual language of art. For nearly three decades, he has transformed his life's journey into his artistic output.

"Almost every work produced is inspired by life experiences and memories collected since childhood, simultaneously forming the basis of my artistic philosophy to this day," Chang said. His artistic path began with active participation in exhibitions around 1996. Since then, he has continuously developed his art, navigating various challenges and achievements that have shaped his identity as an artist.

Yoong Chia is also known for works that address socio-political narratives and issues. He received recognition in 2019 for his retrospective exhibition "Second Life" at the National Art Gallery. His art is also part of the collections at the Gwangju Museum of Art in South Korea and the Singapore Art Museum. He incorporates craft elements like batik and embroidery, experimenting with unconventional mediums such as leaves and crab shells.

Despite the accolades, Yoong Chia acknowledges the mental and emotional trials of being an artist, including periods of fatigue, loss of spirit, and creative blocks. While painting forms the foundation of his artistic journey, Yoong Chia embraces art as a space for experimentation. In his recent work, "Weight Of Feather," he uses images of an eagle and a bat to depict contrasting aspects. "The eagle is often associated with bravery, strength, and is seen as a positive symbol, while the bat usually carries a more negative connotation," he explained.
