Young Argentine tennis star dies in World Cup celebration crash

A promising young Argentine tennis player, 16-year-old Luisana Schomberger, tragically died in a traffic accident in Eldorado, Misiones, while celebrating Argentina's advancement to the World Cup semifinals. The incident occurred early Saturday morning on San Martín Avenue.

Schomberger was a passenger in a Volkswagen Gol driven by a 20-year-old man, identified as Renzo Retamozo. The vehicle, carrying three other young people aged 16, 17, and 20, was reportedly traveling at high speed. They had been celebrating Argentina's victory over Switzerland when the Gol collided with the rear of a Toyota Corolla before veering off and hitting a tree.

Schomberger and Retamozo were fatally injured in the crash. The 17-year-old passenger sustained severe injuries and is in intensive care on mechanical ventilation. A 16-year-old girl suffered fractures and is recovering in a private clinic, while the 20-year-old passenger was discharged but requires ongoing medical checks.

Security camera footage suggests the Gol may have been racing another vehicle. Fernando Caro, Director of Traffic and Transport for the Municipality of Eldorado, stated that images and witness accounts support the theory of a street race. "From the images, it is seen that two vehicles were traveling at high speed on San Martín Avenue. Apparently, a third car that would also be involved was hit by one of the vehicles from behind," Caro reported.

The Argentine Tennis Association (AAT) expressed its grief, remembering Schomberger as a talented and dedicated player from Eldorado. "Argentine Tennis is in mourning.
