Young Asunción Voters Call for More Mental Health Support Ahead of Municipal Election

More than 150 young people told Asunción mayoral candidate Soledad Núñez what they want from the capital: fewer potholes, better streets and sidewalks, safer and better-lit public spaces, cleaner neighborhoods, stronger mental health support, and more recreational and cultural activities.

The demands emerged at an event called “After Solución,” organized with Núñez, the candidate of the Juntos por Asunción alliance. Participants expressed frustration with the city’s current condition, but also said they wanted to take part in finding solutions. They called for a municipality without political appointees, corruption, or opaque administration.

Young people also questioned Núñez about unfinished public works, the municipality’s financial crisis, environmental challenges, and her plans for the city. She highlighted public spaces as places for meeting, leisure, sport, well-being, and mental health. Núñez also announced that she would close the PMT if elected mayor.

The candidate urged young voters to challenge established political power and play a leading role in rebuilding the city. “Who better than young people to raise their voices, confront the machinery of money and power, and be protagonists of victory on October 4?” Núñez said. She described her goal as a municipality that goes beyond service administration and leads Asunción’s economic, social, environmental, and cultural development.

Asunción is currently marked by potholes and accumulated rubbish under interim mayor Luis Bello. The ruling Colorado Party is seeking to retain its political structure with candidate Camilo Pérez, while Núñez has the backing of an alliance of opposition forces. Electoral Justice data shows that people aged 18 to 29 are the least likely to vote.
