Young man seriously injured after jumping from quarry cliff in Hainaut

A young man from the province of Antwerp sustained serious injuries after leaping from a quarry cliff into the water of the former Scoufflény quarry in Écaussinnes, Hainaut.

The mayor of the Walloon municipality stressed that the area is private property and access is strictly prohibited. Due to the quarry's difficult and dangerous terrain, a specialized rescue team (GRIMP) was dispatched to reach and evacuate the injured man via the water. He was subsequently transported to a hospital.

This accident once again shows how dangerous the former quarry is. Despite all warnings, people continue to enter the site, often because social media paints a misleading and attractive picture of this place.

According to reports, the young man was at the quarry with four friends. He injured his shoulder when he jumped from the cliff and landed on an underwater object. The mayor warned that the steep cliffs, deep waters, icy temperatures, and submerged structures create life-threatening conditions. He urged visitors, particularly those from Flanders, not to risk their lives for a jump, swim, or photograph, noting that social media often portrays the dangerous site attractively. This incident follows the drowning of two young people in a quarry in Sprimont, Liège, just last month.
