Young Nigerian Creators Showcase Lagos-Inspired Games on Roblox

Young Nigerian creators have launched Lagos-inspired games on the Roblox platform, showcasing their work at a graduation event for the “Build Africa on Roblox” program held at the University of Lagos. The initiative aims to leverage gaming to project African culture, tell local stories, and depict life across Nigerian and other African cities.

Two teams presented their projects: “Afro Driver,” which captures the fast-paced and often chaotic nature of Lagos transportation, and “Spirit Runner,” an adventure game steeped in cultural themes. Both games are fully playable on the Roblox platform, demonstrating the creators' ability to develop engaging digital experiences.

Gaming has gone beyond just esports because there is so much more it can do. Today, games are helping to shape culture, tell stories and preserve identity. If you look at countries in Europe and Asia, they are using games to tell their own stories. We believe Africa should be doing the same.

The “Build Africa on Roblox” program is supported by the UK-Nigeria Tech Hub, an initiative of the UK Government’s Digital Access Programme (DAP). Gamr Lab delivered the program, with additional support from the French Embassy in Nigeria. Program Lead Gideon Uwem highlighted the program's goal to empower young Africans within the gaming industry, emphasizing that games can shape culture, preserve identity, and even help solve societal problems.

One of the graduating students, Ifeoluwa Ogunmuyiwa, a Computer Science and Mathematics graduate, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn and launch her game, “Afro Driver.” Mobola Akingbala from the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund (LSETF) praised the young creators for developing games that offer entertainment and solutions, indicating potential future support for the program.
