Youngster beats champion in dangerous British cheese-rolling race

Cooper's Hill in Gloucestershire, England, hosted its notoriously bizarre and dangerous cheese-rolling competition, drawing thrill-seekers from around the globe. The steep, near-vertical slope became the stage for a dramatic showdown between local legend Chris Anderson and German YouTube personality Tom Kopke.

Anderson, 38, a 23-time champion who came out of retirement for the event, faced off against Kopke, 24, in what was billed as the "great cheese-off." Despite Anderson's strong start, Kopke, known online as "Tooleko," overtook him on the treacherous descent to secure his third consecutive win. After the race, Kopke humorously remarked, "If the hill is hell, I am the devil."

This centuries-old tradition, with origins possibly dating back 400 years as a pagan ritual for good harvests, has evolved from a local event into an international phenomenon. Videos of the chaotic races, where participants chase a rolling wheel of Double Gloucester cheese, garner millions of views online, fueled by influencers participating in extreme competitions worldwide.

Authorities have officially classified the event as "unsafe" due to concerns about emergency services' response capabilities. However, local officials have stated they do not intend to halt the tradition. The cheese itself, a crucial element of the race, is carefully preserved, kept cool, and specially packaged to withstand the high temperatures and the rough descent.

While Chris Anderson did not win the main event, his 11-year-old son, William, secured a victory in one of the children's races, expressing a desire to compete in the downhill race himself when he is older, ensuring the Anderson family's continued involvement in the unique tradition.
