YouTuber accused of threatening Kim Soo-hyun with private photos, 180 billion won extortion

YouTuber Kim Se-ui, head of the Garo Sero Institute (GSI), faces serious charges including defamation, illegal distribution of images, attempted coercion, threats, and stalking, stemming from his online broadcasts targeting actor Kim Soo-hyun. Prosecutors allege that Kim Se-ui threatened to release damaging information about Kim Soo-hyun, even comparing the potential scandal to the Nth Room case, a notorious online sex crime network.

According to the indictment, Kim Se-ui repeatedly spread false information on his YouTube channel, including claims that Kim Soo-hyun had been dating singer Kim Sae-ron since she was a minor. He allegedly released a photo of Kim Soo-hyun's lower body and threatened to reveal more private pictures unless Kim Soo-hyun publicly admitted to and apologized for the fabricated relationship. Kim Se-ui also reportedly threatened to release related materials if a drama starring Kim Soo-hyun proceeded with its release, suggesting the production company could claim damages of up to 180 billion won (approximately $130 million USD).

The charges detail Kim Se-ui's alleged actions, including broadcasting false information about Kim Soo-hyun's private life 25 times to damage his reputation. He is also accused of demanding an apology and admission of the relationship, threatening further photo releases if his demands were not met. This alleged behavior continued even after a court issued protective measures against Kim Se-ui, ordering him to stay away from Kim Soo-hyun's residence and cease contact through various communication channels.

Kim Se-ui's first court hearing is scheduled for July 14th. The prosecution's case paints a picture of a systematic campaign of harassment and intimidation aimed at extorting a public apology and admission from the actor through the dissemination of false and damaging information, escalating to threats of significant financial and reputational harm.
