Yunlin heritage festival invites visitors into old streets and buildings

Yunlin’s 2026 National Heritage Day program is inviting residents into the county’s streets, historic buildings and cultural sites to explore the area’s urban memory. The program opened on Sept. 5 and will run through Oct. 16, with 14 themed events and 30 participating heritage venues.

This year’s theme, “Tracing the Past, Seeing the City,” links heritage sites into routes across different townships rather than treating them as isolated points. The program includes guided heritage walks, cultural and environmental education, restoration workshops, lectures on cultural assets and environmental theater performances.

The activities are designed to show how architecture, local history, the environment and preservation work fit together. Visitors can take part in practical sessions and receive explanations of the craft and techniques used to restore historic buildings.

Yunlin’s Department of Culture and Tourism said the county had completed 40 cultural heritage restoration projects between 2019 and 2026, while 55 restoration projects had been promoted in total. Officials said reuse programs have returned historic buildings to everyday community life as spaces for culture, education and public exchange.

The events will take place across multiple townships, allowing participants to explore Yunlin’s local memories and cultural landscape through buildings, neighborhoods and daily life.
