Zagreb installs insect hotel near playground, first residents move in

A novel initiative in Zagreb's Špansko neighborhood has introduced an "insect hotel" near a new children's playground, offering a unique habitat for beneficial insects. Located on Ulica Josipa Pupačića, the wooden structure is designed to provide shelter for solitary wild bees and other insects vital for the local ecosystem.

The hotel features numerous small tunnels, serving as nesting sites where female solitary bees lay eggs and store pollen and nectar for their larvae. The entrances are sealed with mud, leaves, or resin, indicating that a "room" is occupied rather than empty. These insects are crucial for pollination and, unlike honeybees, do not live in hives and are generally not aggressive.

Wild bees, particularly solitary bees, are important pollinators of flowers, trees, and plants. While males lack stingers, females will only sting if directly threatened, making them safe to coexist with humans in urban environments. Some species of solitary wasps also contribute to pest control by preying on aphids and caterpillars.

This project, supported by the "Špansko for Everyone" initiative, aligns with similar green urban projects seen in European cities like Oslo, Utrecht, and Paris. Residents have been urged not to disturb the new inhabitants, who are described as working diligently from dawn till dusk to earn their "lodging."
