Zagreb officials tackle illegal waste dumping at multiple sites

Zagreb Mayor Tomislav Tomašević has engaged with local counterparts to combat illegal waste dumping, emphasizing a shared interest in halting the practice. Following concerns raised at Ježdovec, illegal waste accumulation has also become a problem at two additional locations: Kosnica, situated between Zagreb and Velika Gorica, and the site of the former Dioki industrial complex.

Mayor Tomašević confirmed discussions with Velika Gorica Mayor Krešimir Ačkar regarding the Kosnica site, which, although not within Zagreb's administrative boundaries, could impact the city. Both mayors agreed to enhance existing operational cooperation between Zagreb and Velika Gorica. Tomašević noted that Mayor Ačkar has also reported the Kosnica case to authorities dealing with organized crime.

At the former Dioki site, where environmental groups warn of up to 40,000 tons of waste, the situation is complicated by it being private property. Mayor Tomašević explained that city officials lack the authority to enter and inspect private land. Consequently, the City of Zagreb has been in close communication with the State Inspectorate, which holds jurisdiction over such matters.

Tomašević highlighted the significant fire risk posed by the accumulated waste. The responsibility for removal has been further complicated by the company's bankruptcy. However, there are signs of progress, as Tomašević indicated that the new owner has begun removing waste from the Dioki location, expressing hope for a swift resolution. He reiterated that the city's hands are largely tied due to the private ownership of the site.
