Zagreb recycling centers only accept used cooking oil at select locations

A Zagreb resident's attempt to properly dispose of used cooking oil at multiple recycling centers was met with repeated rejections, prompting an inquiry into the city's waste management procedures. The resident's experience highlighted a lack of clarity regarding where household cooking oil can be accepted for recycling.

Zagrebački holding, the city's utility company, clarified that while recycling centers do accept various types of recyclable waste, the disposal of used edible oil is restricted to specific locations. Not all of the city's 22 recycling centers are equipped to handle this type of waste.

Used edible oil from households is regularly accepted at recycling centers equipped with specialized retention containers for oil collection.

According to the holding, used edible oil from households can be brought to all 11 mobile recycling centers and five stationary ones: Podsused-Vrapče, Klara, Sesvete Jelkovec, Žitnjak, and Jakuševec. These locations must be equipped with specialized retention containers for oil collection. Residents are limited to bringing a maximum of 10 liters of used oil per visit, in a portable container, which is then transferred into the designated collection vessel.

The service is exclusively for individuals; businesses cannot use these recycling centers for used cooking oil disposal and must contract with authorized waste management companies. This clarification aims to guide residents on the correct procedure, emphasizing the need to verify if a specific recycling center accepts used oil before visiting.
