Zagreb residents protest new road project, fearing loss of green space

Residents of Zagreb's Trnsko neighborhood are fiercely opposing a planned road extension project, fearing it will lead to the destruction of a significant green area. The proposed road, intended to improve connectivity, is set to pass through the southern part of Park mladenaca, a cherished local park.

Who allowed this? This cannot happen! We already have enough dense traffic in the neighborhood, this will only worsen the situation. It must be said that the residents of Trnsko and Siget are strongly against this project.

The project, envisioned since the 1960s, is now closer to realization as the city has selected a designer for a section of the route. While residents in the nearby Sveta Klara district are reportedly pleased with the prospect of better transport links to the rest of the city, their neighbors in Trnsko are incensed.

Residents have launched a petition, which has gathered over 800 signatures, to voice their opposition. They argue that the road will not only eliminate a vital green space but also worsen already congested local traffic. "We will be living next to an avenue instead of a quiet street. This is unacceptable," stated one resident, emphasizing the need to preserve the neighborhood park.

However, the head of the Trnsko local community, Radovan Bjeloš, is attempting to de-escalate the situation. He claims that the current plan does not involve any encroachment on the neighborhood's green areas and suggests that the residents' concerns stem from a misunderstanding. Bjeloš asserts that the current project section is located in the southern part of the neighborhood, near the railway and Radmanovačka street, and has no connection to Park mladenaca.
