Zagreb's HNK concludes season with sold-out premiere of 'Othello' ballet

The Croatian National Theatre (HNK) in Zagreb has concluded its theatrical season with the premiere of the ballet "Othello." The production, directed and choreographed by Valentina Turcu, is based on William Shakespeare's timeless tragedy and features music by Gustav Mahler.

The ballet "Othello" delves into a great love story that descends into tragedy due to lies and jealousy. Following a wartime victory, Othello and Desdemona begin their life together, but the envious Iago devises a plan to destroy Othello. Through his schemes and fabrications, Iago successfully sows seeds of doubt and mistrust, leading Othello to believe Desdemona has betrayed him. Driven by jealousy and Iago's manipulations, Othello makes fatal decisions that culminate in a tragic end.

Artist Valentina Turcu, known for previous successful collaborations, worked with the Zagreb ballet ensemble to translate the classic literary work into a contemporary dance expression. Turcu also contributed to the dramaturgy and musical concept of the performance. The HNK notes that Turcu's choreography of "Othello" embarks on a hypnotic journey, exploring layers of raw male emotions and the melancholic inner world of women.

Turcu described "Othello" as a political drama and a timeless classic, stating, "What is dark and intoxicating about it is the fact that it still affects our lives and our society. This constant vertigo, this madness, this speed, wars, crime, shocking information, a world that is becoming faster and more restless." She is particularly interested in interpersonal relationships within Shakespeare's work, choreographing the unspoken to create atmospheres where truth and honesty are the foundation of the artistic expression.

The premiere featured Guilherme Gameiro Alves as Othello, Takuya Sumitomo as Iago, and Iva Vitić Gameiro as Desdemona. The cast also includes Rieka Suzuki Sumitomo as Emilia, Taiguara Goulart as Cassio, and Simon Yoshida as Roderigo. The HNK announced that all six scheduled performances of "Othello" in June were sold out weeks in advance, with new performances planned for October 2026.
