Zagreb Square Renovation to Modernize Historic City Center

Zagreb is continuing its efforts to enhance public pedestrian spaces within the historic city core with the upcoming renovation of Trg svibanjskih žrtava 1995. Located between Schlosserove stube, Vlaška, and Šoštarićeva streets, the square's worn paving will be replaced. The city has initiated public procurement for the project, with an estimated value of 100,000 euros before value-added tax. Completion is anticipated by next spring.

The renovation will cover approximately 600 square meters. New concrete pavers, measuring 20 by 20 centimeters and ten centimeters high, will be installed. These pavers will have a sandblasted surface and a gray granite color. Stone borders, totaling 74 meters, will be placed along the edges adjacent to surrounding buildings and the continuation of the pedestrian path towards Vlaška and Šoštarićeva streets. As the square is within a protected historic urban area, the pattern of the new paving must be approved by conservation supervisors before installation.

The project also includes a plan to reuse existing materials. Around 350 square meters of undamaged, three-part hexagonal pavers will be cleaned, palletized, and transported to a city warehouse. These preserved pavers will be available for future localized repairs on other pedestrian surfaces paved with the same elements. The work will also involve significant underground adjustments, including excavation, preparation of the foundation layer, and the creation of a new load-bearing layer using crushed stone material. Where utility lines are shallow, the foundation for the pavers will be reinforced with concrete.

Existing infrastructure, such as water supply, telecommunications, gas boxes, and lightning rod elements, will be adjusted to the new surface height. Tactile paving and traffic signalization will also be installed. Before the work begins, existing urban furniture like trash bins, planters, and bicycle racks will be removed. Deputy Mayor Luka Korlaet stated that the renovation will create a more cohesive and pleasant pedestrian route through the city center, connecting the recently refurbished Schlosserove stube with Vlaška Street and the planned redevelopment of Stara Vlaška.
