Zagreb Train Station Bicycle Parking Lot Becomes Illegal Car Park Six Months After Promises

Six months after HŽ Infrastruktura promised a modern "bike-box" system at Zagreb's main train station, the area designated for bicycle parking has transformed into an "illegal car park and a dumping ground for unregistered scooters," according to the Croatian Cyclists' Union.

The union released photos on July 22, 2026, showing the stark reality of the situation, which contrasts sharply with the initial announcement made about half a year prior. They expressed disbelief that a bicycle parking area at the main train station of an EU member state capital could be in such a state.

In February, following criticism from the Cyclists' Union, HŽ Infrastruktura had responded by stating that four racks for 24 bicycles were available on the west side of the station, with an additional rack for six bicycles on the east side. They also announced plans to install a closed and covered "bike-box" system on the west side, near platform five. This system, designed for secure bicycle parking and weather protection, has already been implemented in other Croatian locations like Čazma.

However, the union's latest update indicates a significant failure to implement the promised improvements, with the existing facility now being used for unauthorized parking and storage of abandoned vehicles.

It is hard to believe that the bicycle parking of the main railway station of the capital of an EU member state can look like this. Instead of the "bike-box" system announced about half a year ago, the location of the existing bicycle parking has devolved into an illegal parking for cars and a dumping ground for unregistered scooters.
