Zagreb Undergoing Extensive Summer Roadwork with Over 20 Major Construction Sites

Zagreb has transformed into a sprawling construction site this summer, with simultaneous infrastructure work underway at over 20 locations. The city is undertaking its most extensive wave of road and utility repairs in years, with projects valued in the millions of euros. Drivers navigating the capital are encountering closed roads, temporary traffic diversions, and construction machinery in nearly every district.

Work is progressing on multiple fronts: overpasses and gas pipelines are being renovated in the west, tram lines are being reconstructed in the center, new infrastructure is emerging in the south, and roads and bridges are being repaired in the east. These efforts go beyond simple repaving, aiming to replace utility networks, some nearly half a century old. The goal is to simultaneously upgrade water, gas, tram, and sewage systems alongside road surfaces to prevent repeated excavations in the coming years.

The most significant project is the reconstruction of Ulica grada Vukovara, a major artery. Preparatory work began in late March, with the main phase starting in April and a planned completion in early September. This section, between Ozaljska Street and Savska Road, involves a five-million-euro overhaul of the main water supply, tram lines, and the road itself. Traffic has been rerouted, with Tratinska Street temporarily becoming a two-way street. Further traffic adjustments are in place at the busy intersection of Savska and Vukovarska roads until the end of August.

Meanwhile, several kilometers west, Selska Street is undergoing gas and water pipeline reconstruction, also slated for completion by early September. Despite the summer lull in traffic, morning commutes can still see congestion. The city assures residents that these extensive repairs will ultimately lead to a more stable water supply, improved tram infrastructure, and safer roads, though drivers must endure detours and longer journeys until the end of the summer.
