Žalgiris on the brink after heavy defeat; president reacts

FK Žalgiris faces a precarious situation in European competition after a 2-5 loss to HNK Hajduk Split at the Liepkalnis Stadium. The defeat has severely diminished their prospects heading into the second leg of the tie.

Following the match, Žalgiris president Andrius Tapinas shared his thoughts on Facebook, acknowledging the lessons learned from a "European-level team." He noted that Hajduk's players were individually stronger and capitalized on even minor errors, of which Žalgiris made "plenty." Tapinas reflected on what might have been if the halftime score had been level, but conceded that Hajduk's quality would likely have prevailed regardless. He described Hajduk, even in a "certain crisis," as a "different level of beast."

Despite the loss, Tapinas expressed that he was "a little sad, but not ashamed." He highlighted that the "house of Vilnius Žalgiris has only just begun to be built" and that significant work lies ahead for coach Andrius Skerla and others. He thanked the fans who remained in the stadium until the end, promising a good performance in the return leg in Split. "We combined, we went on the attack, we lifted the stadium twice, we shot at the goal 10 times," Tapinas wrote, underscoring the team's offensive efforts.

During the match, Roko Pukštas, a dual-citizen player born in the U.S. to Lithuanian parents, scored Hajduk's fifth goal. His celebration near the corner flag, which included gestures to the crowd, angered some Žalgiris supporters. One fan threw a plastic beer cup onto the field, narrowly missing Pukštas, while another fan attempted to approach the player. Security intervened, and Pukštas appeared to signal an apology. The incident, involving the throwing of an object, could lead to a fine for FK Žalgiris, with FIFA typically imposing penalties ranging from 3,000 to 10,000 euros for such offenses.
