Zelensky replaces Syrsky as Ukraine's top general amid protests

President Volodymyr Zelensky has replaced Oleksandr Syrsky as Ukraine's commander-in-chief, appointing Mykhailo Drapatyi to the role. Zelensky announced the change on Telegram, expressing gratitude to Syrsky and the soldiers for maintaining Ukraine's frontline positions. The decision comes after days of speculation and public unrest stemming from internal government disputes.

I have decided that the new commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine will be Mykhailo Drapatyi. I am grateful to Oleksandr Syrsky and all our soldiers for Ukraine's solid frontline positions.

Drapatyi's name had been circulating as a potential successor, with Zelensky meeting him among other candidates. The crisis reportedly escalated following the removal of Defense Minister Mykhaylo Fedorov, leading to significant conflict between Fedorov and Syrsky. Zelensky apparently felt Syrsky's removal was necessary to resolve the internal friction.

The public reaction to Fedorov's dismissal was unexpectedly strong, with protests erupting in cities across Ukraine. Organizers issued an ultimatum, demanding Fedorov's reinstatement by Friday or threatening indefinite nationwide protests. Syrsky had previously apologized to Fedorov, stating he was surprised by their conflict and emphasizing their working relationship during wartime.

Syrsky defended his actions, stating his focus is on the war effort and strategy, not personal disputes. Drapatyi brings a strong military background, having participated in the liberation of Mariupol in 2014 and leading the defense of Kryvyi Rih in March 2022. He also commanded forces during the liberation of the Kherson region.
