Zelensky sacks Ukraine's top army commander amid protests

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has removed Oleksandr Syrskyi from his position as commander-in-chief of the armed forces, a significant leadership change occurring just days after the dismissal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. Fedorov's earlier removal had triggered street protests across the nation.

Mykhailo Drapatyi, formerly the commander of Ukraine's Joint Forces, has been appointed as Syrskyi's successor. Initial speculation had suggested a potential conflict between Fedorov and Syrskyi as a reason for the Defence Minister's dismissal, a notion that was reportedly confirmed.

Fedorov, 35, has been widely recognized for revitalizing the defence ministry and modernizing the armed forces, alongside leading anti-corruption initiatives. In contrast, Syrskyi, 60, is perceived by many within Ukraine as a commander rooted in Soviet-era military doctrine, hesitant to implement radical reforms within the army.

In a social media post, President Zelensky expressed gratitude to Syrskyi for his contributions, particularly in defending the capital, Kyiv, during the initial phase of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, and in other military campaigns. Zelensky described Drapatyi as a popular and battle-hardened general. The president indicated that all decisions would be formalized the following day.
