Zelenskyy indicates who is suited to be Ukraine's new prime minister: 'Best prepared'

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has indicated that Serhiy Kurets, the current head of the national energy company Naftohaz, is the most suitable candidate to become the country's next prime minister. Zelenskyy emphasized that preparing Ukraine for the approaching winter, a period that has been particularly challenging due to Russian attacks on energy infrastructure, will be the primary focus for the new government leader.

"If we are entering the winter period, we must be prepared for it. We have been preparing for a long time, but the priorities are clear – preparation for winter. Therefore, Serhiy Kurets, after all consultations, is probably the best-prepared person to take on the position of Prime Minister of Ukraine," Zelenskyy stated during a press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Kyiv.

Political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko echoed this sentiment, telling Radio Svoboda that Kurets is an optimal choice. Fesenko highlighted Kurets's strong reputation both within Ukraine and internationally, noting his lack of political affiliations. This, Fesenko suggested, would allow a government led by Kurets to concentrate on economic and technological development.

Zelenskyy had previously announced the resignation of Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko, who is expected to oversee a crucial area of cooperation with a key partner. Parliament subsequently voted to accept Svyrydenko's resignation, leading to the dissolution of the entire government. A vote on the new prime minister is anticipated on Thursday. Kurets, born in 1978, has a background in engineering and economics, holding an Executive MBA and having led Ukrnafta since November 2022.
