Zelenskyy proposes 3-point peace plan, sees late 2026-summer 2027 as key window for ceasefire

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has outlined a three-point peace proposal aimed at ending the conflict with Russia, identifying a specific timeframe as a critical opportunity for a ceasefire. Zelenskyy believes the period from the end of 2026 through the summer of 2027 presents a golden opportunity for peace, particularly considering the upcoming U.S. presidential election campaigns in 2028. He stated that this window, beginning around the G20 summit in December, is the opportune moment to bring the Russia-Ukraine war to a close.

The proposed plan encompasses three key elements. Firstly, it addresses the immediate cessation of hostilities. Secondly, it incorporates a proposal, previously advocated by the United States, to establish a free economic zone in the Donbas region. The third point focuses on the future roles of the European Union and NATO, alongside Ukraine's own commitments towards achieving peace. Zelenskyy emphasized that these proposals are not solely Ukraine's initiative but were developed in conjunction with the U.S. and European partners, with some elements stemming from previous negotiations involving U.S. envoys.

This initiative comes as a senior Russian diplomat recently expressed openness to new proposals for resolving the Ukraine conflict, provided they reflect "realities on the ground."
