Zelenskyy’s Office Chief: Ceasefire Proposal Reached Putin, but He Has Not Responded

Ukraine says it sent Vladimir Putin a ceasefire proposal, but Russia has yet to answer. The proposal covered more than a pause in strikes on Ukrainian territory. It also called for fighting to stop along the line of contact, according to Kyrylo Budanov, head of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Office.

Budanov made the comments to Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne. He also acknowledged the reality on the ground with a blunt remark: “The drones are flying, you have all seen it.”

The statement came ahead of a planned visit to Ukraine by U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner on Sept. 6. Budanov said the two were expected to visit Russia first. He suggested Russian forces might refrain from attacking Kyiv while U.S. administration representatives were in the capital.

Ukrainska Pravda reported that Ukrainian authorities had tried to arrange a temporary ceasefire along the contact line before the visit. Ukraine’s defense forces received orders to observe a halt from midnight on Sept. 5 until 11:59 p.m. on Sept. 8. The plan failed after Russian forces prevented it from taking effect, and Ukraine’s General Staff later said fighting was continuing because Russian forces had not stopped their aggression.
