Zelenskyy seeks peace talks progress before winter, eyes U.S. drone and missile aid

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is pushing for progress in peace negotiations with Russia before the onset of winter, seeking to capitalize on what he describes as Ukraine's enhanced strategic advantage on the battlefield. Zelenskyy expressed his desire to engage in diplomatic discussions to secure peace, emphasizing the need for a timely approach.

However, U.S.-mediated talks aimed at achieving a peace agreement have reportedly stalled, with Washington's attention diverted to the conflict in Iran. Meanwhile, Ukraine has intensified its campaign of medium and long-range strikes targeting Russia, primarily focusing on its oil industry. Zelenskyy noted that Russia began losing its initiative on the battlefield in December 2025, creating a window of opportunity for diplomatic action.

"So, now we have this period before winter... before winter we need to find a way, a diplomatic way, to sit down and talk," Zelenskyy stated in an interview with CBS's 'Face the Nation.' He believes this requires sustained pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin, both within Russian society and through further sanctions, rather than their removal.

Ukraine is also exploring avenues for joint drone technology development with the United States, leveraging its five years of experience in countering Russian drones and missiles. Zelenskyy mentioned existing drone agreements with some Middle Eastern and European countries, expressing hope for a similar significant agreement with the U.S. Additionally, Ukraine is requesting U.S. assistance with air defense missiles until a European system is fully developed.
