Žemaitaitis: The party consulted Matjošaitytė, but no one was paid

Remigijus Žemaitaitis has acknowledged that he consulted Laura Matjošaitytė on various issues, while insisting that neither he nor Nemunas Dawn paid her for the conversations.

Speaking to Žinių radijas on Friday, the party leader rejected reports of financial settlements. Asked whether anyone had paid for the consultations, he answered, “Absolutely none.” He described the information circulating in the media as “completely absurd speculation” and said the matter should be examined by the responsible institutions.

Žemaitaitis said he personally contacted Matjošaitytė for informal advice. He recalled exchanges such as, “Hello, there is a question. How do you imagine the situation would be?” In his view, such conversations should not be treated as paid consultations. If the party had needed professional advice on specific issues, he said, it would have hired specialists. Instead, the party decided that it could resolve some questions itself, meaning no payment was made.

This is completely absurd speculation, an unhealthy storm whipped up. I hope that both the Chief Official Ethics Commission and all the services will clarify the matter and put an end to the story.

Delfi reported on Monday that Matjošaitytė may have advised Nemunas Dawn and helped the party prepare a response for the Central Electoral Commission. The Justice Ministry said the information should be assessed by the Chief Official Ethics Commission. The commission said it had received a complaint and had instructed its investigations department to evaluate publicly available information about possible consultations involving a commission member.

Matjošaitytė told Delfi that she could not disclose whether she had been paid, citing attorney-client professional secrecy. The Central Electoral Commission said it found no expenses for her legal services in Nemunas Dawn’s submitted financial documents. The issue comes after the commission concluded that the party and Žemaitaitis had seriously violated election law by accepting funds from prohibited sources during the 2024 parliamentary and presidential campaign. The commission said the party used donations from legal entities, third parties and improperly routed membership fees, including €4,300 partly originating from a legal entity.
