Zepto, Blinkit facilities face action over food safety violations

Authorities in India have taken action against quick-commerce platforms Zepto and Blinkit, citing serious food safety and hygiene violations. In Bengaluru, a Zepto warehouse was sealed after food safety officials discovered unhygienic conditions during an inspection. The Karnataka Food Safety and Drug Administration found issues with food handling, storage, labeling, and branding at the facility.

Similarly, in Mumbai, the Maharashtra Food Safety and Drug Administration suspended the license of a Blinkit facility in Malad (West). The action was taken following the discovery of significant food safety and hygiene breaches. These crackdowns are part of a broader special inspection campaign by state governments aimed at ensuring compliance with food safety regulations.

Officials have warned that food business operators found violating safety rules will face strict legal action. The inspections have covered various aspects, including quality, safety, storage, and labeling practices, under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Samples of various food items and prepared food have been collected for laboratory testing.

Zepto stated that it is cooperating with the authorities and is taking steps to address the observations made during the inspection. The company reiterated its commitment to maintaining high standards of food safety and hygiene. However, the incidents highlight ongoing concerns about food safety standards within the rapidly growing quick-commerce sector.
