Zermatt Ends Summer Ski Operations Amid Heatwave; National Teams Seek Alternatives

Summer ski operations on Zermatt's Theodulgletscher have been halted due to the extreme heat affecting the region. The glaciers, even in Switzerland, are suffering significantly from the rising temperatures.

While Zermatt's summer ski season has ended, Swiss-Ski, the national ski federation, can still continue its training. This is made possible through special solutions and the use of snowmobiles for transport, allowing athletes to access training facilities.

However, the situation is more challenging for international teams, such as the Austrian Ski Federation (ÖSV). These foreign associations are finding it increasingly difficult to secure alternative training venues. For the first Austrian delegation, the focus is already shifting to upcoming training camps in South America, where winter conditions with ample snow are currently prevailing in Chile and Argentina.

The closure in Zermatt highlights the growing impact of climate change on winter sports infrastructure. As temperatures rise globally, traditional summer training grounds are becoming less reliable, forcing athletes and federations to seek out new and often distant locations to maintain their training schedules.
