Zeynep Sönmez advances to Wimbledon second round

Turkish national tennis player Zeynep Sönmez has progressed to the second round of the Wimbledon Championships, securing a hard-fought victory over American opponent Ann Li. Sönmez triumphed in a three-set thriller, demonstrating resilience after an early deficit.

Competing in the main draw of the third Grand Slam tournament of the season, Sönmez, currently ranked 51st in the world, faced the 29th-ranked Ann Li. Li started strongly, establishing a commanding 4-1 lead in the first set. However, Sönmez mounted a remarkable comeback, winning consecutive games to take the set 7-5, despite initially failing to convert set points.

The momentum shifted in the second set, with Li dominating to level the match at 1-1 by winning the set 6-1. The decisive third set saw both players maintain their service until 4-4. Sönmez then secured a crucial break, ultimately winning the set 6-4 and clinching the match victory.

Sönmez's win marks a significant achievement in her Wimbledon debut. She previously defeated Li in two prior encounters at the Merida Open, extending her head-to-head record to 3-0. In the second round, Sönmez is set to play the winner of the match between American Claire Liu and Belgium's Hanne Vandewinkel.
