Zidane Presented as New France Coach, Replacing Deschamps

Zinedine Zidane was officially unveiled as the new head coach of the French national football team on Tuesday, stepping into the role previously held by the highly successful Didier Deschamps. Zidane, a celebrated figure in French football history, expressed his profound emotion at the appointment, stating that coaching the national team was the only position he desired.

Speaking at the French Football Federation (FFF) headquarters in Paris, Zidane revealed that he had turned down numerous offers to manage club teams over the past four to five years, prioritizing the opportunity to lead the French squad. FFF President Philippe Diallo confirmed the four-year contract for the iconic former player, describing the moment as exceptional due to Zidane's legendary status and lifelong aspiration to coach France.

Zidane's legacy as a player is cemented by his pivotal role in France's 1998 World Cup victory. His return as coach nearly two decades later marks a significant chapter. His playing career also includes a Euro 2000 title and a memorable Champions League win with Real Madrid in 2002. His coaching career is equally distinguished, notably achieving an unprecedented three consecutive Champions League titles with Real Madrid from 2016 to 2018.

Deschamps departs after an extensive 14-year tenure, during which he guided France to their second World Cup title in 2018 and reached the final in 2022, ultimately losing to Argentina. France also secured a fourth-place finish in the 2026 World Cup under his leadership. Zidane, 54, had been without a coaching position since his second stint at Real Madrid concluded in 2021.
