Zimbabwe declares state of disaster after 44 die in Lake Kariba boat capsize

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared a state of disaster after a tragic boat capsize on Lake Kariba claimed the lives of 44 people. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, has prompted a government-wide response to assist those affected by the disaster.

Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe stated that the disaster declaration will enable the government to deploy extraordinary measures and resources. The vessel was en route from Kariba to Chalala when it was struck by strong waves near Long Island, causing it to capsize. It was carrying 114 passengers and five crew members, with an unconfirmed number of children also on board.

Search and rescue operations have been ongoing, with 77 individuals successfully rescued to date. The government has pledged its commitment to protecting lives and ensuring all necessary resources are mobilized for the ongoing search, rescue, recovery, and humanitarian response. The Civil Protection Unit is coordinating the multi-agency effort, focusing on accounting for every person who was on the vessel. The government extended its deepest condolences to the families of the victims.
