Zimbabwe's Parliament Speaker Mudenda Elected President of Pan-African Bureau

Jacob Mudenda, Speaker of Zimbabwe's Parliament, has been elected President of the Bureau of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP). The announcement came during the ongoing PAP 2026 Annual Conference of Speakers of National and Regional Parliaments, held in Midrand, South Africa.

The two-day conference, themed 'The Role of Parliamentary Diplomacy in Strengthening Relations with National and Regional Parliaments and Contributing to the Achievements of the Objectives of Agenda 2063,' saw Mudenda preside over the proceedings in his new capacity. He was accompanied by Senate President Mabel Chinomona and other Zimbabwean delegates.

In his initial address, Mudenda emphasized the need for African Parliaments to transition 'from deliberation to decisive action.' He highlighted Zimbabwe's advancements across various Agenda 2063 aspirations. These include the Pfumvudza/Intwasa agricultural program, support for 1.5 million learners through the Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM), performance-based governance contracts, the establishment of the Museum of African Liberation, and the creation of women and youth banks alongside 2,500 Village Business Units powered by solar boreholes.

The conference concluded with the adoption of the Johannesburg Declaration, signaling a commitment to collective action on continental challenges. The event underscored the importance of parliamentary diplomacy in fostering stronger inter-parliamentary relations and driving progress toward Agenda 2063 goals.
