Zinedine Zidane fulfills 'dream' with France national team coaching appointment

Zinedine Zidane, the iconic former French footballer, has officially been named the new head coach of the French national team, a position he has long aspired to. The announcement was made by the French Football Federation (FFF) president, Philippe Diallo, at the federation's headquarters in Paris.

In February 2025 I met with Zinedine Zidane to propose the position.

At 54 years old, 'Zizou' steps into the role after a successful, albeit short, managerial career, most notably with Real Madrid where he achieved an unprecedented three consecutive Champions League titles. He succeeds Didier Deschamps, a former teammate, who has managed the national team since 2012, guiding them to a World Cup title in 2018 and a runner-up finish in 2022.

Zidane stated that taking the helm of the French national team was the "only position" he desired, having reportedly turned down offers from various clubs over the past few years. During his presentation, an emotional Zidane declared the appointment a "dream come true" and dedicated his new role to the firefighters and agricultural workers battling devastating wildfires across the country, particularly in the Gironde region.

The position of coach of France was the only one I wanted. I have had proposals over these four or five years to manage clubs but I have rejected them all for the French national team.
