Zulum Expands Healthcare Support With 42-Room Patients’ Lodge for Maiduguri Hospital

Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has handed the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital a 42-room patients’ lodge, extending a series of state-funded interventions at the federal medical institution in Maiduguri.

The facility will house relatives and visitors of patients receiving treatment, especially people who travel from distant parts of Borno and neighboring communities. At its commissioning, Zulum said the project reflected his administration’s commitment to better healthcare infrastructure and more humane treatment for patients and their families.

The lodge is the latest in a broader package of support for UMTH, one of the North-East’s major referral hospitals. Zulum previously provided N100 million for medical consumables and other urgent needs. His administration also built 24 three-bedroom homes for medical personnel, intended to ease accommodation problems and keep doctors and other workers closer to the hospital.

The governor has approved a further N1 billion for kidney transplant and maternal health services at UMTH. The hospital also received N500 million after the 2024 flood disaster. Officials said the state supports federal institutions when their operations directly affect residents’ welfare and security.

UMTH Chief Medical Director Ahmed Ahidjo thanked Zulum for his continuing assistance. He said the interventions had improved the hospital’s ability to serve patients and working conditions for medical staff. Zulum’s administration has also supported infrastructure and housing at the University of Maiduguri, supplied patrol vehicles to security agencies and approved start-up grants for federal institutions in Borno and neighboring areas.
