About Le Soleil
Le Soleil is a state-run daily newspaper in Senegal, founded in 1970 by then-President Léopold Sédar Senghor. The state has remained its main shareholder since Senegal's transition to democracy in 2000.
As a state-run outlet in a 'partly-free' media environment, Le Soleil generally reflects the government's perspective. Senegal's press freedom has faced challenges, including restrictive defamation and 'fake news' laws, and politically motivated prosecutions against journalists. In August 2022, journalists at Le Soleil went on strike due to mismanagement, unpaid bonuses, and unfair layoffs, facing 'brutal, abusive, and ignominious treatment' from police. While it is a quasi-official daily, its state ownership and the broader constraints on press freedom in the country suggest its editorial content may be influenced by government interests.
Reading context
Outlets in Senegal often work under tighter political or legal limits than in countries ranked as fully free for press. We keep each headline's original tone on purpose, so you can see how stories are usually framed for domestic readers.
