Peanut Straw Price Surge: A Crisis Strangling Livestock Breeders (1/4)

Senegalese livestock breeders are facing a crisis as the price of peanut straw, a staple fodder known locally as 'Ngooñ,' has dramatically surged. In less than a month, the cost of a bag has more than doubled, skyrocketing from 4,000 to an alarming 8,000-9,000 FCfa. This sudden and unexplained price hike has plunged many breeders, especially in Dakar where options are scarce, into deep dismay and surprise.

The timing of this price increase is particularly concerning, as it comes just ahead of the Tabaski festival, a major event in Senegal that involves the traditional sacrifice of sheep. The "generalized" costliness of animal feed, with peanut straw being the most sought-after, now casts a dark shadow over the expected price of sheep this year. Breeders are struggling to comprehend the sudden inflation, especially since it deviates from the usual seasonal price adjustments that typically occur closer to the rainy season.

Resellers, like Sidi Bara Ba and his brother Khadim Ba, who are prominent feed dealers in Keur Mbaye Fall, express their own confusion and discomfort. They find the current prices unjustified and are finding it increasingly difficult to meet the demands of their clients. The situation is exacerbated by reports that the bags of straw are not even filled to their usual capacity, adding a layer of concern about both price and quality. This unprecedented situation is causing significant hardship and uncertainty for those who rely on livestock for their livelihood, a concern that resonates deeply within the local community and is discussed with a mix of frustration and bewilderment.

In my opinion, nothing justifies the bag of peanut straw going from 4,000 to 8,000 FCfa in such a short time. I have been in this sector for years and I can say that what is happening is not normal. A rise approaching the rainy season would have been understandable, given the scarcity of fodder and the difficulties of the rural world during the lean period. But we are not there yet.
