10 in custody over killing of Benue MACBAN chairman

Police in Kogi State, Nigeria, are actively pursuing three suspects in connection with the death of a 30-year-old primary school teacher, Maryam Usman. Usman reportedly succumbed to injuries sustained after she was assaulted for disciplining a pupil at Brains Minds Nursery and Primary School in Ugbamaka, Olamaboro Local Government Area.

The incident occurred on June 18, 2026, when Abdullahi Ishaka, accompanied by two women, allegedly confronted and assaulted the teacher over the disciplinary action taken against a student. The teacher was initially treated at a local hospital before being transferred to Iko-Ojo Hospital for further medical attention. Tragically, she passed away on June 25, 2026.

The Kogi State Police Command spokesperson, SP Oyiza Salisu Afusat, confirmed the case of culpable homicide was reported on June 25. Preliminary investigations were conducted at the scene and the deceased's residence. Arrangements are underway to transport the body to the General Hospital, Ankpa, for an autopsy.

Afusat stated that the suspects fled the scene prior to the arrival of law enforcement officers. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend them. Once arrested, the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough and discreet investigation.
