12 injured in clash at Bogura hospital as interns begin strike

At least 12 people, including six intern doctors, were injured in a late-night clash at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura after the death of a patient with prolonged respiratory problems.

The confrontation began around 11 p.m. when relatives approached doctors over their allegation that the patient had died after receiving a wrong injection. The relatives also alleged that interns confined and beat some of them before police rescued them.

Bogura Sadar police gave a different account. Officer-in-Charge Ibrahim Ali told The Daily Star that relatives first attacked the intern doctors, accusing them of medical negligence. The interns then confined and assaulted some relatives, he said. Police took four people into custody.

Hospital authorities said three of the six injured interns suffered serious injuries. Manzur A Morshed, an official of the medical college, said 10 to 15 outsiders attacked the interns after the patient died. He denied the allegation of wrong treatment and said the patient had suffered from respiratory problems for a long time.

The interns stopped work indefinitely from midnight, demanding justice for those involved in the attack on doctors. The strike remained in effect at 12:45 p.m. At least four alleged participants were identified as activists of different ward-level units of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal. District General Secretary MR Hasan Palash said the organisation was investigating and would take disciplinary action if members were found to have participated.
