12 'Los Caballeros Templarios' members detained in Michoacán extortion case

Mexican federal authorities have successfully obtained a pre-trial detention order and provisional prison sentences for 12 individuals suspected of belonging to a criminal cell affiliated with Los Caballeros Templarios. These arrests and subsequent legal actions target alleged extortion activities in the Uruapan municipality of Michoacán.

The group is accused of systematically extorting local businesses, specifically targeting avocado packers, butchers, and cattle ranchers. This alleged criminal enterprise operated within Michoacán, a region known for its agricultural production and unfortunately, for the presence of organized crime.

The charges brought against the 12 suspects are severe, encompassing crimes against health, illegal possession of firearms, ammunition, and magazines intended exclusively for military use. The investigation was reportedly initiated following a complaint from authorities in the United States, highlighting the transnational nature of these criminal activities. The arrests were the result of coordinated efforts involving various security agencies, including the Secretariat of Citizen Security and Protection, the National Guard, the Secretariat of National Defense, and the Federal Attorney General's Office.
