17 fall ill from suspected potato salad poisoning in Germany

Seventeen participants at an event in Achen, Germany, were hospitalized after falling ill, with authorities suspecting food poisoning from potato salad.

Emergency services initially responded to a call about an unconscious individual. Upon arrival, medical personnel found five more people, several lying on the floor, all exhibiting similar symptoms: nausea, dizziness, and vomiting. Given the number of affected individuals, a mass casualty incident was declared, and additional emergency medical resources were dispatched.

All 17 hospitalized individuals had consumed potato salad before falling ill. Investigators believe the salad likely spoiled due to the high ambient temperatures. Firefighters also checked the building for carbon monoxide or other dangerous gas poisoning, but measurements showed no hazardous substances. The investigation is ongoing, but spoiled food is the primary theory.

Ten emergency medical vehicles, several emergency doctors, and volunteers from the organization "Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe" participated in the rescue operation. Sign language interpreters, already present at the event held at the Center for the Deaf, assisted in communication with the affected individuals.
