2. Bundesliga: Hertha BSC wins opener at VfL Bochum – Fan banner stops match

Hertha BSC kicked off their 53rd season in the 2. Bundesliga with a victory, securing a 1-0 win against VfL Bochum in their opening match. The game, however, experienced an unusual interruption when a fan banner obstructed an emergency exit in the away supporters' section.

The banner's placement led to a temporary suspension of play in the 21st minute. Stadium announcements urged fans to remove it, and after approximately six minutes, during which both coaches used the time for team talks reminiscent of World Cup drink breaks, the banner was rolled up, and the match resumed.

Hertha BSC scored the decisive goal of the match. Following the resumption of play, the game saw more action around the goals. Despite Bochum's attempts to find an equalizer, including a header from Philipp Hofmann and a shot from Berkan Taz, Hertha's defense, particularly Niklas Kolbe, managed to thwart their efforts.

The team from the capital maintained their slim advantage throughout the second half, employing tactics to run down the clock. Despite late pressure from Bochum, including a shot from Gerrit Holtmann and a save by Hertha's goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck, Hertha held on to secure the crucial opening-day victory.
