209 Flights Canceled at Soekarno-Hatta Airport After Anak Krakatau Eruption

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport canceled 209 flights on Sunday, Sept. 6, after the potential spread of volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau led to a temporary shutdown.

The airport closed from 1:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. local time under NOTAM A3341/26. Airport management said the decision aimed to mitigate risks and protect flight safety. Of the canceled flights, 160 were domestic, 39 were international and 10 carried cargo.

The airport activated its Service Recovery Activation system for affected passengers. It provided food and light refreshments, while buses at each terminal supported passenger transfers to hotels in coordination with airlines. A support post opened at Terminal 1B to coordinate assistance and operational needs.

Management also coordinated with terminal retailers to keep commercial services operating around the clock. Flight schedules and passenger handling were being adjusted with relevant stakeholders, while operations were restored gradually based on volcanic ash conditions and aviation safety considerations.
