22,000 Isolated in Chile's Atacama Region Due to Heavy Rains

Heavy rains have left an estimated 22,000 people isolated in Chile's Atacama Region, according to Sofía Cid, the presidential delegate for the region. The severe weather has caused active ravines that continuously obstruct the single main road connecting to areas like Alto del Carmen, where nearly 4,800 people are cut off. Cid reported that efforts to clear the road are hampered by the recurring blockages. "We have around 22,000 people isolated, but these are very specific sectors," Cid stated, highlighting the challenges in restoring connectivity. "For example, in Alto del Carmen, we have almost 4,800 people isolated because the only connection is a single highway, which is being cleared, but active ravines keep blocking the road again, preventing us from restoring connectivity."

Despite the isolation, authorities are providing support. Cid confirmed that 306 people are currently housed in shelters across the affected communes. While the situation is serious, Cid indicated that a regional state of catastrophe has not been deemed necessary at this time, emphasizing that regional authorities are operational and actively working on the ground. The focus remains on managing the immediate crisis and ensuring the safety and well-being of the isolated population.
