Tongoy Delegate Makes Urgent Plea for Central Government Aid as Town Becomes 95% Isolated

Tongoy's municipal delegate, Gonzalo Pardo, has issued an urgent plea to the central government for assistance, describing the coastal town as 95% isolated. The severe flooding, caused by the overflowing Tongoy estuary and adjacent wetlands, has cut off vital access routes.

"We need central government support today, not tomorrow or yesterday, today. Enough is enough, because the message is clear, the need is urgent, and the territory is too extensive for us to handle," Pardo told Cooperativa. He highlighted the critical nature of the situation, emphasizing that local resources are insufficient to address the widespread impact.

Pardo explained that Tongoy, situated on a peninsula, became largely inaccessible after simultaneous overflows from the estuary, Quebrada Romeral, Quebrada de Pachingo, and the Pachingo and Salinas Chica wetlands. This isolation affects connectivity with surrounding areas like Puerto Aldea, Hacienda El Tangué, and Camarones, leaving residents stranded and severely limiting the town's ability to receive aid or evacuate.

The delegate's urgent call underscores the severity of the environmental event and the vulnerability of coastal communities. The lack of access poses significant challenges for emergency services and the delivery of essential supplies, making immediate central government intervention a necessity for the town's survival and recovery.
