50,000 Join Perlis Independence Eve Celebration

More than 50,000 people gathered at Kompleks Tuanku Syed Putra in Kangar for Perlis’ National Day eve celebration, with nearly 2,000 university reserve officer cadets among the main attractions.

The cadets joined the parade after Raja Muda of Perlis Brigadier General Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail called for their participation. They formed one of 70 contingents representing state and federal government agencies and nongovernmental organizations.

The celebration was attended by Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail and Raja Perempuan Perlis Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Almarhum Tengku Abdul Rashid. Tuanku Syed Faizuddin also attended with Raja Puan Muda Perlis Tuanku Dr. Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil and their daughter, Sharifah Farah Adriana Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail.

Performances included appearances by Liza Hanim, Nawary Kilauan Emas, Kugiran Wak Jeng, Renjaka Band and Guitar Rockestra. The program also featured a joint band from Markas 30 Brigade, a martial arts performance, a Royal Malaysia Police pantomime and the Rentak Anak Malaysia performance.

At midnight, Menteri Besar Abu Bakar Hamzah led the independence eve countdown. The crowd raised the Jalur Gemilang and sang Negaraku before fireworks closed the celebration. Abu Bakar said independence should be treated not only as an inheritance, but as a responsibility to pass to the next generation in better condition. "We are not merely heirs to independence but also shapers of the future," he said.
