56 teams vie for N2m at Akindele football tourney

A total of 56 teams are gearing up to compete for N2 million in prize money at the ninth edition of the Bola Akindele U-15 Boys and Girls football competition. The trophy was unveiled at a presentation ceremony in Lagos, marking the start of the highly anticipated grassroots tournament.

Dr. Adebola Akindele, the sponsor, emphasized that the tournament's primary goal is to secure the future of talented young athletes. He lamented that many possess exceptional skills but are left to fend for themselves on the streets. "These hidden talents are on the street without hope, that’s why I’m sparing no effort to rescue them through the sponsorship of the competition," Akindele stated.

Organizers highlighted that the competition offers more than just prizes; it provides valuable life lessons, fosters friendships, and creates lasting memories. The Lagos State Grassroots Soccer Association's mission is to develop talent, build character, and instill a passion for football in young participants.

Tournament coordinator Taofeek Ajibola detailed the prize structure: winners in both the boys' and girls' categories will each receive N400,000 and a trophy. The first runners-up will get N300,000, while the third and fourth-placed teams will pocket N200,000 and N100,000, respectively. Additional monetary awards are reserved for outstanding players.

The tournament kicks off Saturday at the Ojoniyu Sports Centre, Ebute-Metta, Lagos Mainland. Thirty-two teams are registered for the boys' category and 24 for the girls'. The grand finale is scheduled for Sunday, August 30.
