Nigeria make history with 3×3 basketball victory

Team Nigeria made history at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games by achieving their first-ever 3x3 basketball victory. They defeated the Cayman Islands 21-17 in their Pool A opener, securing the win with one minute and 36 seconds left on the clock.

The Nigerian team displayed a disciplined performance, combining sharp shooting with solid perimeter defense to overcome their opponents. This encouraging start to their Commonwealth Games campaign was celebrated by the Nigerian camp, with National Sports Commission Director-General Bukola Olopade joining the players and officials.

The win provides an early boost to Team Nigeria's overall campaign, which includes athletes competing in boxing and para powerlifting. Nigeria is represented by 74 athletes across 10 sports in Glasgow, with the National Sports Commission aiming for 16 to 20 gold medals.
